The Vernacular Lounge is proud to present new paintings by Dean Buchanan, inspired by his recent mountain climbing expeditions to the South Island. These magnificent paintings are a bird’s eye view of the North and South Islands, detailing the topographical features of the land. The most striking qualities of these works are their immense dynamism, the sense that everything – mountains, lakes, ocean and trees – is alive and in continuous circular motion (this circularity is represented by Dean in another new series, landscape mandalas) and that everything is interconnected.
The aerial views are a new and exciting perspective on the land; Dean’s previous paintings represent an interior view, of being in the landscape and looking out from it, or up to it, as with his earlier mountain series.
